On September 14th, I was given the opportunity to interview one of Toronto's creative designers, Tara White. Tara White is the designer for Embody clothing and Accessories.
Using recycled fabrics that she finds in Thrift Shops and Garbage bins, Tara designs unique apparel for the artistic mind. "As unique as the individual who wears it!" says Tara. Her clothing is a representation of her personality and artistic being. The objective isn't necessarily to start a trend.
Tara White is an OCAD graduate who studied textiles and metal welding. Starting her career as a jewelry designer, Tara realized that what she truly wanted to do was become a fashion designer. In part, this decision was influenced because of her background in sewing. Her mother had owned a drapery company.
Tara's designs are unique representations of her emotions. Having to grow up with the difficulty to express her emotions with words, Tara chose her clothing as a sort of translator.
Most of her clothing is created from men's shirts and blazers. With women's clothing being made more inexpensively as the years progress, Tara finds that resorting to men's clothing helps the quality of her clothes. Also, Tara does not waste any part of the fabrics she uses. You may find a collar of a shirt be used as a rim on a vest, or maybe the top of a pocket. All of her garments are unique in the sense that she does not use the items in a conventional way. Most of her clothing is also reversible, which gives the added bonus of getting two in one.
The inspiration for her designs come from the fabric she finds, but more importantly, from Burning Man. Burning Man is a city created each year in the Nevada Black Rock Dessert. Tens of thousands of people come to create a place of community and self-expression. Tara Attends Burning Man every year and finds most of her inspiration there.
Though Embody clothing is not necessarily for everyone, Tara offers unique designs for the unique mind. With corset themed tops, creative vests, and whimsical dresses, Tara creates a carefree and stylish wardrobe for the artistic fashionista.
For someone who has "never planned ahead", Tara is on the right track. Having recently qualified as one of the finalists for the Art of Fashion Competition, Tara's creative work has been exposed to many people. Networking is key in the fashion industry, and competitions are a great way to increase your clientele and who you know! The best advice Tara will give you is to be persistent. "There are nine no's to every one yes" she says. You've got to be optimistic!
